A Warm Welcome From The Schroeders

We are thrilled to be launching this blog as a new way to connect, share, and communicate with our local community. Getting to Know the Schroeders For anyone who doesn't know us well yet, Rod and Shannon are celebrating nearly 30 years of marriage and are proud parents to a grown daughter, who graduated CGD almost 10 years ago! Our house is now home to our 12 year old Brittany Spaniel and 3 year old Tabby cat . Dr. Schroeder’s Journey to Chiropractic After graduating North East Hamilton High School, Rod attended Ellsworth Community College and Iowa State University while also serving in the Iowa Army National Guard . During his time in the Guard, he served as both a flight medic and helicopter crew chief.  He completed his education at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa , graduating in 2007 . After building his skills for two years in a busy clinic in Minnesota, Dr. Schroeder and Shannon felt the call to return home to Iowa and open Wright Choice Chiroprac...

Why Intense Bursts Outperform Hours of Walking

The "One-Minute" Secret As we continue our journey into a healthier 2026, many of you have asked me a common question: I want to exercise, but I just don't have the time every day for the gym. Isn't there a shortcut?" Recent research suggests the answer is a resounding yes . In fact, the way we think about "exercise" is changing. New studies on what scientists call VILPA (Vigorous Intermittent Lifestyle Physical Activity) show that you don't need a gym membership to transform your heart health. You just need sixty seconds and a bit of "gusto." The Power of the 60-Second Burst A study from the University of Sydney, published in Nature Medicine , followed over 25,000 people who didn't officially "exercise." They found that those who engaged in just three to four 1-minute bursts of vigorous activity throughout the day saw a staggering 40% reduction in all-cause and cancer-related death risks. Even more impressive, their ri...

New Year, New Rhythm

Why Timing and Real Food Are Your Best Health Tools Happy New Year! As a chiropractor , I see many of you coming into the office this month with a renewed focus on wellness. Whether you want to lose weight, reduce joint pain, or simply feel more vibrant, the most effective strategy I’ve seen doesn’t involve a complicated "fad diet." Instead, it focuses on two fundamental pillars: When you eat and What you eat. This formula relies on a powerful concept called Intermittent Fasting (IF) combined with a "Real Food" foundation. The Science of "The Switch" Most of us eat from the moment we wake up until we go to bed. Trust me, we've been guilty of this too! This keeps our insulin levels high all day. Think of insulin as a key that opens the doors to your cells to store energy. When insulin is always "on," your body stays in storage mode. By following a 14/10 (10 hours of eating, 14 hours of resting) or 16/8 (8 hours of eating, 16 hours of rest...

When Holiday Cheer Doesn’t Come Easily

The holiday season is often described as joyful, magical, and full of cheer. Everywhere you look, there are bright lights, festive music, and messages telling us this is the most wonderful time of the year . But for many people, including me, that isn’t always the full picture. For me, the holidays can feel… off. I don’t have a lot of warm, cozy childhood memories tied to this season. I miss people I’ve lost. Some years, it feels like I’m simply going through the motions: showing up, smiling when I should, and checking the boxes of what the season is supposed to look like. And that can bring a quiet heaviness that’s hard to explain. If this resonates with you, I want you to know something important: you’re not alone. When the Holidays Feel Heavy Many people struggle during the holidays, even if it doesn’t look that way from the outside. Grief, family changes, financial stress, health concerns, or past experiences can all surface more strongly this time of year. The pressure to ...

Embracing Self-Acceptance as We Age: Finding Freedom in Strengths, Weaknesses, and Authenticity

As the years go by, something unexpected and wonderful can happen: we begin to understand ourselves in a deeper, more meaningful way. Aging isn’t just about physical change, it’s also a powerful emotional and mental shift. For some of us, it brings a growing sense of clarity. We start to see our strengths more clearly, acknowledge our weaknesses more honestly, and, maybe for the first time, truly accept the whole picture. And acceptance can feel like freedom. Seeing Ourselves with More Compassion When we’re younger, we often move through life with a kind of urgency, wanting to prove ourselves, fit in, stay small, stay perfect, or simply keep up. But as we get older, we’re given a chance to soften. Instead of striving for perfection, we can start striving for peace. Self-acceptance means recognizing that our weaknesses don’t define us, they guide us. They teach us where to ask for help, where to grow, and where to give ourselves grace. At the same time, our strengths become s...

Staying Safe This Winter: Protecting Your Back from Snow and Ice

Hey everyone, it's Dr. Rod Schroeder from Wright Choice Chiropractic in Clarion. With that massive winter storm dumping 12 inches of snow on us just two days ago, I wanted to share some practical tips on staying safe out there. After nearly 20 years as a chiropractor , I've seen too many winter-related injuries, especially to the spine and back. Slips on ice and heavy shoveling can lead to strains, herniated discs, or worse. Let's keep you upright and pain-free this season! First, walking on snow and ice: It's all about balance and caution. Walk like a penguin: take short, flat-footed steps with your weight centered over your feet. (I have to remind Shannon of this every morning when we get to work!) This reduces the risk of slipping and jarring your spine. Avoid rushing; give yourself extra time to get places. If you do fall, try to roll with it rather than bracing stiffly, which can shock your back. Proper footwear is key to preventing tumbles. Invest in boots with ...

The Changing Seasons of Life: Finding Balance in Times of Transition

2009 A Few Months Before Opening WCC As we move through the year, it’s easy to notice how seasons shift. They're subtle at first, then all at once. What’s less obvious is how our personal seasons change too. Sometimes the transition is gentle. Other times, it pulls us in unexpected directions. And yet, just like nature, these shifts often bring growth, clarity, and a chance to realign with what matters most. This past year has been a vivid reminder of that for our family. One of the biggest changes has been watching Rod’s dad settle into a care center. It isn’t a phase of life anyone looks forward to, and it comes with its own kind of heartache. But it has also brought moments of gratitude, knowing he’s safe, supported, and surrounded by people who care for him with compassion. It’s a season that requires patience and acceptance, but it’s also one that teaches us how deeply connected family truly is. Rod's Sister, Rod, Rod's Dad & Rod's Cousin Another shift we’...
