Embracing Self-Acceptance as We Age: Finding Freedom in Strengths, Weaknesses, and Authenticity

As the years go by, something unexpected and wonderful can happen: we begin to understand ourselves in a deeper, more meaningful way. Aging isn’t just about physical change, it’s also a powerful emotional and mental shift. For some of us, it brings a growing sense of clarity. We start to see our strengths more clearly, acknowledge our weaknesses more honestly, and, maybe for the first time, truly accept the whole picture.

And acceptance can feel like freedom.

Seeing Ourselves with More Compassion

When we’re younger, we often move through life with a kind of urgency, wanting to prove ourselves, fit in, stay small, stay perfect, or simply keep up. But as we get older, we’re given a chance to soften. Instead of striving for perfection, we can start striving for peace.

Self-acceptance means recognizing that our weaknesses don’t define us, they guide us. They teach us where to ask for help, where to grow, and where to give ourselves grace. At the same time, our strengths become something we can truly celebrate instead of downplaying or hiding.

It’s a gentler way of living.

Letting Life Be Fun Again

Somewhere along the way, many adults fall into survival mode. Schedules, responsibilities, and expectations take priority, and joy gets pushed to the side. But living isn’t supposed to be a constant grind.

What if we gave ourselves permission to enjoy our own lives again?

That might look like laughing a little louder, trying something new, taking up a hobby just because it makes us smile, or refusing to apologize for the things that bring us joy. When we embrace fun - not as a luxury but as a necessity - we lower stress, support our mental health, and improve our overall well-being. And yes, that includes our physical health too. A body under less stress simply functions better. Read THIS BLOG POST to learn about my experience addressing my physical health.

Allowing Ourselves to Be “Silly”

With age often comes more confidence: the confidence to look a little silly, try something different, or be delightfully weird in the best possible way.

It’s not immaturity, it’s authenticity.

This kind of freedom actually supports holistic health. When we stop worrying so much about how we appear and focus instead on how we feel, we reduce anxiety, move our bodies more freely, and reconnect with the people around us in deeper ways.

Being yourself - unfiltered and unforced - is one of the healthiest choices you can make.

Why This Matters for Your Health

At our clinic, we talk about physical alignment but emotional alignment is also important. When you begin to accept yourself, honor your strengths, and give grace to your weaknesses, your life becomes more aligned:

  • Stress decreases

  • Sleep improves

  • Movement feels easier

  • Pain levels drop

  • Your body and mind work together instead of against each other

I monitor these factors with #8 on THIS LIST.

Self-acceptance is more than a mindset. It’s part of whole-body wellness.

Give Yourself Permission

As we age, we have a choice: to shrink and stress… or to expand and embrace.

Choose the version of yourself that feels fun, real, and fully alive.

Allow yourself to grow older without growing harder.
Let yourself laugh.
Try things.
Get it wrong sometimes.
Be beautifully, authentically you.

Navigating Surgery, Perimenopause & Wellness: My Personal Journey

If you’ve been in the clinic recently, you may know I’ve been on a bit of a health journey myself. This year brought a major chapter in my wellness story, a surgery and a deeper dive into understanding perimenopause and what it means for my long-term health. If you aren't sure what I'm talking about, I'll quickly fill you in. I recently took time off of work to undergo and recover from a hysterectomy . My care team and surgery team were amazing! They were knowledgeable, comforting and supportive.  As someone who spends every day helping others on their path to better health, it felt important to be open about this part of my life too. You never know who could need to hear this! Sometimes we forget that healing, growth, and change are lifelong journeys, even for those of us who work in healthcare. Why I Chose to Share This Women’s health, especially midlife health, doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. There’s a lot of confusion, stigma, and “push through it” ...

A Husband & Chiropractor's Perspective On My Wife’s Hysterectomy And Perimenopause Journey

It’s one thing to support patients through major health experiences. It’s another thing entirely when it’s your spouse. Recently, my wife went through a hysterectomy, and even before that, she was experiencing the confusing and emotional rollercoaster that is perimenopause. As a chiropractor , I spend my days helping patients find natural, conservative care options whenever possible. Surgery is rarely the first recommendation in my world. So when it became clear my wife truly needed one, it was a big moment for both of us. And like many husbands, I wanted to help... but I also quickly realized I had a lot to learn. The First Step: Education (For Both of Us) When my wife’s nurse practitioner (read more about Shannon's care team in THIS BLOG POST ) suggested she read The New Menopause by Dr. Mary Claire Haver , she shared that with me. And even though Shannon hadn’t read it yet , I bought the book and dove in. Why? Because I didn’t want to be ignorant. Times are changing, and so i...
